Psychotherapy & Counseling

I work with individuals, couples, and families to offer them the tools they need to reach their goals. My approach is supportive, creative, and collaborative and focuses on helping my clients to create more satisfying lives. I encourage my clients to take active steps toward a life they value, even when such steps seem daunting.

More than a quarter of Americans experience depression, anxiety or other psychological challenges in any given year. Many need help coping with an illness or other behavioral concerns. Still others struggle to cope with relationship troubles, job stress, grief, substance abuse, or other issues. These problems can become debilitating.

You may be uncertain whether psychotherapy is the “right” path for you.

The American Psychological Association states that…. “Because of the many misconceptions about psychotherapy, you may be reluctant to try it out. Even if you know the realities instead of the myths, you may feel nervous about trying it yourself."

Overcoming that nervousness is worth it. That’s because any time your quality of life isn’t what you want it to be, psychotherapy can help.

Some people seek psychotherapy because they have felt depressed, anxious, or angry for a long time. Others may want help for a chronic illness that is interfering with their emotional or physical wellbeing. Still others may have short-term problems they need help navigating. They may be going through a divorce, facing an “empty nest”, feeling overwhelmed by a new job or grieving a family member’s death, for example.

SIGNS THAT YOU COULD BENEFIT FROM THERAPY INCLUDE:
- You feel an overwhelming, prolonged sense of helplessness and sadness.
- Your problems don’t seem to get better despite your efforts and help from family and friends.
- You find it difficult to concentrate on work assignments or to carry out other everyday activities.
- You worry excessively, expect the worst or are constantly on edge.
- Your actions, such as drinking too much alcohol, using drugs or being aggressive are harming you or others.”

When someone seeks out a psychologist, they are usually looking for relief from uncomfortable thoughts, feelings, or behaviors. They want to find ways to experience more satisfaction in life. If you still have questions about the ways in which psychotherapy can help you, please call me so that we can talk about options that are available to you.

Executive Coaching

Are you an executive or manager looking to develop your skill set in your position? Could you benefit from support to prepare to move into another role? Executive Coaching can be a powerful tool. I have worked with many C-Suite Leaders and Mid-level managers to help expand and enhance their leadership “tool box”.

An executive coach is a qualified professional that works with executives or other high-performing employees in leadership or management roles to help them gain self-awareness, clarify goals, and achieve their development objectives.

From 2000 until 2004 I was part of a small team at NASA that designed and implemented an agency-wide Leadership Coaching Program. I subsequently managed the Coaching Program at the NASA center where I worked for 14 years.

Most executive coaches are not psychologists. My background and training as a psychologist enhances my ability to help leaders who want to take their skills to a higher level.

Executive coaches provide a confidential and supportive sounding board to their clients. They ask questions, challenge assumptions, help provide clarity, provide resources, and yes, sometimes, with permission, provide advice. They often administer and help interpret feedback given by a client’s supervisors and subordinates as well as behavioral assessments.

During my time at NASA I helped to design and then implement a three-day training program for high performing managers. This class was so successful that participants stated that the course should be longer! In a world where the “short version” is valued, this feedback assured me that the content and structure of the class was hitting the mark.

Corporate Training

Which so-called “soft-skills” would best serve your employees? I have designed and implemented countless training opportunities- from several hours to several days in length- for employee groups. Often the specific topics are particular to something that has happened in the workplace. Examples include workplace violence awareness/prevention, civility in the workplace, job burnout, resiliency.

I take great care to customize training specific to the target group. I prefer to design training that is specific to the culture and/or needs of a particular group. When training is “tailor made” in this way, it has a significant impact on the participants and the insights are much more likely to be adopted and integrated into the day-to-day work,

I have developed and implemented numerous courses that can be offered in the workplace in order to enhance employee engagement and to help groups become more cohesive and productive to meet the ever-growing demands of the workplace.

If you are looking for high-impact, results-oriented training for your employees, call me to discuss the ways in which we could work together.

Dr. Kathy Christian

Clinical Psychologist

I received my BA in Psychology at the University of California at Los Angeles and my MA and PhD in Clinical Psychology at the California School of Professional Psychology in San Diego. I am a licensed psychologist in Virginia and California.

About Dr. Kathy Christian

I have been providing effective psychotherapy to adults, adolescents, and children for more than 30 years. I work with individuals, couples and families. Psychotherapy is a powerful process. I apply a variety of approaches to help clients understand themselves, their relationships with others, and their goals for the future. Life brings all kinds of challenges– depression, irritability, anxiety, and relationship difficulties are just some of the symptoms that can exist. When obstacles are understood and removed, a more gratifying life becomes possible. I will collaborate with you to help you deal with the issues you are facing, build on your strengths, and equip you with the tools to handle both present and future concerns.

Professional Settings

  • Medical: Upon receiving my PhD, I spent a year in a postdoctoral fellowship where I worked training Family Practice physicians-to-be. There, my interest in the ways that the mind and body can be so closely and inexorably connected was developed. I spent another 3 years working with physicians in hospitals to help them help their patients. This experience has given me the knowledge necessary to work with individuals who suffer from physical problems that are accompanied by psychological concerns.
  • Government: For 14 years I worked at NASA as the Manager of their Employee Assistance Program. I worked with employees and their family members who were from all walks of life. I designed and presented training on a wide range of topics. I served on a committee at NASA where I helped to create the agency-wide Leadership Coaching Program. I provided executive coaching and training for all levels of leaders. At NASA I started a Therapy Dog program where I trained and obtained certification for 2 standard poodles (Dexter and Ella). One of them came to work with me each day. Seeing the incredibly positive impact of Therapy Dogs in a workplace was extremely rewarding and was truly a wonder to witness. Ella and Dexter are still part of my family and I look forward to using them in my practice in the future.
  • Law Enforcement, First Responders, and Military Veterans: I have worked with law enforcement professionals (local, county, state, federal) and military vets over most of my career, and especially during the past 4 years in Federal law enforcement. I have become steeped in law enforcement culture and this knowledge helps me work effectively with those in these special groups.
  • Trauma and Disasters: I have delivered Critical Incident Stress Management services to many groups, perhaps most notably after Hurricane Katrina (in Mississippi) and Ike (in Texas). I understand how to work effectively with both the victims of traumatic incidents and those who work on the front lines to help them.
